The difference between classifying workers as contractors and employees is getting more important, according to new laws. With the Great Recession having prompted more businesses to cut corners, many employers have snuck over that line, treating certain individuals as contractors in an effort to save costs, such as workers compensation premiums, Social Security and Medicare taxes, income tax withholding and employee benefits.
