Contractor v. Employee

The difference between classifying workers as contractors and employees is getting more important, according to new laws. With the Great Recession having prompted more businesses to cut corners, many employers have snuck over that line, treating certain individuals as contractors in an effort to save costs, such as workers compensation premiums, Social Security and Medicare taxes, income tax withholding and employee benefits. They go to work early and stay late. They personally shake every client’s hand and close every deal. They build their company one meeting at a time and their greatest capital is themselves. They’ve put their blood, sweat and tears into running every aspect of the company. Unfortunately, there is only so much of that owner to go around.
